Barley Mow

Project Overview

We were appointed to deliver a transformational upgrade to The Barley Mow, a much-loved pub nestled in the heart of St Philip’s, Bristol. This ambitious project involved a full two-storey side extension, a comprehensive internal refurbishment, and the conversion of the first-floor flat into a dynamic restaurant and event space.

Scope of Works

  • Two-Storey Side Extension
A sympathetic yet functional expansion that increased both ground and first-floor capacity. Designed to blend seamlessly with the original structure, the extension accommodates additional seating and service areas, significantly enhancing the venue’s operational flexibility.

  • Full Internal Refurbishment
A major overhaul of the ground-floor pub interior, including structural alterations, new flooring, bespoke joinery, lighting, and upgraded services throughout. The finishes were carefully selected to respect the building’s heritage while offering a fresh, welcoming atmosphere.

  • First-Floor Flat Conversion
The former residential space was reimagined into a vibrant restaurant and event venue, ideal for private hire, dining experiences, and community functions. This flexible, modern space boasts new flooring, custom lighting, upgraded insulation and acoustic separation to ensure comfort and versatility.

Challenges & Achievements

The project required close coordination with structural engineers, conservation specialists, and the client to ensure the work was completed to the highest standard, with minimal disruption to the existing pub operation. Despite the complexity, the transformation was delivered on time and to specification, breathing new life into a historic local venue.

Outcome

The result is a rejuvenated Barley Mow — a space that celebrates community and craftsmanship. With extended capacity, upgraded amenities, and a new first-floor venue space, the pub is now positioned as a leading social and dining destination in Bristol.
