Design & Document Reviews

Identify gaps, resolve risks and strengthen project information

Design information must be clear, coordinated and suitable for the stage at which it is being issued.

Incomplete details, conflicting drawings or unclear specifications can create uncertainty during approval, procurement and construction. Identifying these issues early gives the project team an opportunity to resolve them before they affect cost, quality or programme.

Celona Consulting provides structured design and document reviews for clients, consultants, contractors and specialist subcontractors.

A focused and independent review

We review project information against the agreed brief, design scope, project stage and intended purpose of the issue.

The review can examine architectural, structural, building-services and specialist information individually or as a coordinated package. We focus on matters that could affect completeness, buildability, coordination and project delivery.

Our reviews can include:

  • Drawings, specifications, schedules and reports
  • BIM models and coordinated design information
  • Compliance with the brief and design scope
  • Interfaces between consultants and subcontractors
  • Buildability, access and maintenance considerations
  • Drawing, specification and schedule consistency
  • Missing, conflicting or unclear information
  • Design risks, assumptions and outstanding decisions

Reviewing the design as a whole

Individual documents may appear complete when viewed separately but conflict when considered as part of the wider design.

We compare related information to identify inconsistencies between plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, specifications and consultant packages. Particular attention is given to interfaces where responsibility passes between different designers.

This provides a clearer view of whether the design works as a coordinated whole.

Clear comments and actions

A useful review should do more than mark up problems.

We record comments clearly, explain the reason for each item and identify the party best placed to respond. Findings can be prioritised according to their potential effect on safety, compliance, coordination, procurement or construction.

Reviews can be supported by marked-up drawings, comment schedules, action trackers and design-review meetings. Responses can then be monitored until the significant items have been addressed.

Support at key project stages

Design and document reviews can be undertaken at a single project milestone or repeated as the information develops.

They can support planning submissions, technical-design gateways, tender packages, subcontractor design reviews, construction releases and handover information.

The scope and review criteria are agreed before work begins. The review supports the project’s quality-assurance process but does not replace the responsibilities of the appointed designers or approving authorities.

Why choose Celona?

We combine design management, architectural, technical, BIM and construction experience.

This allows us to review information from both a design and delivery perspective, considering not only what has been drawn but how the information will be understood, coordinated and used.

Strengthen your design before it is issued

Whether you require an independent review of a single package or ongoing support throughout the project, we can tailor the process to your design stage and priorities.
